WIZZ Priority Explained: What You Get and What It Costs

28 September 2026Last updated 21 October 2026

WIZZ Priority (officially called WIZZ Priority) gives you two main things: an overhead cabin bag allowance and the right to board before everyone else. Without it, you're limited to one under-seat bag measuring 40 × 30 × 20 cm, weighing up to 10 kg. With it, you can also bring a larger cabin bag measuring 55 × 40 × 23 cm, up to 10 kg.

The add-on costs between £6 and £25 per person, per flight, depending on when you book and which route you're flying. It's cheaper when you add it during your original booking, and it gets more expensive at the airport. If you turn up without it and need the extra bag, you'll pay a gate fee of around €65 — easily the most expensive option.

What WIZZ Priority actually includes

When you buy WIZZ Priority, you get:

  • One overhead cabin bag (55 × 40 × 23 cm) weighing up to 10 kg
  • One under-seat bag (40 × 30 × 20 cm) weighing up to 10 kg
  • Priority boarding — you board immediately after families and passengers needing assistance
  • Priority security lanes at some airports (not all)

You don't get seat selection, extra legroom, or fast-track check-in. Those are sold separately or bundled into WIZZ Go and WIZZ Plus fares. WIZZ Priority is purely about bags and boarding order.

Both bags count towards your total allowance. The under-seat bag goes beneath the seat in front; the cabin bag goes in the overhead locker. You can't swap one for the other — both must meet their respective size limits.

How much WIZZ Priority costs

Pricing varies by route, season, and how far in advance you book. As a rough guide:

Booking stageTypical cost per flight
During original booking£6–£12
After booking (Manage Booking)£10–£18
At online check-in£12–£20
At the airport desk£18–£25
At the gate (if allowed)around €65

The gate fee is applied if your bag doesn't fit the sizer or if you didn't pre-book cabin bag access. Wizz Air staff are strict at the gate, and there's no discretion once you're called out. If you think there's any chance you'll need the space, book it beforehand.

For context, Ryanair's Priority & 2 Cabin Bags costs roughly the same, though their free under-seat allowance is smaller at 40 × 30 × 20 cm. easyJet charges differently — you either buy the large cabin bag as a standalone add-on or get it included with certain fares, as detailed in our easyJet hand luggage guide.

When WIZZ Priority is worth it

It makes sense if:

  • You're travelling for more than two nights and need a full-size cabin bag
  • You're carrying bulky items like a coat, boots, or camera gear
  • You want guaranteed overhead locker space (lockers fill quickly on busy flights)
  • You value early boarding to settle in without the scrum

It's less worthwhile if:

  • You can pack everything into a 40 × 30 × 20 cm under-seat bag (see our guide on maximising underseat bag space)
  • You're flying mid-week in off-peak season and lockers are unlikely to fill
  • You've already paid for checked baggage and don't need cabin space

For a long weekend, many travellers manage perfectly well with just the free under-seat allowance. Our weekend packing guide shows how to fit three days' worth of clothes, shoes, and toiletries into 40 × 30 × 20 cm without paying extra.

WIZZ Priority vs WIZZ Go and WIZZ Plus

Wizz Air also sells two fare bundles:

  • WIZZ Go includes one overhead cabin bag, one checked bag (up to 20 kg), and standard seat selection
  • WIZZ Plus includes everything in WIZZ Go, plus a larger checked bag (up to 26 kg), guaranteed neighbouring seats for groups, and flexible rebooking

If you were planning to buy checked baggage anyway, WIZZ Go often works out cheaper than buying Priority and hold luggage separately. The bundles are priced dynamically, so compare them side by side during booking.

WIZZ Priority on its own is the right choice if you only need cabin baggage and don't want to pay for extras you won't use.

Bags that fit the free allowance

If you're trying to avoid the Priority fee altogether, your bag must fit 40 × 30 × 20 cm and weigh no more than 10 kg. Wizz Air's sizers are rigid, and gate staff check frequently.

These bags from Bag2Travel fit comfortably within the free allowance:

Both are designed to pass the sizer every time and hold more than you'd expect. For tips on getting the most out of limited space, see our article on packing cubes for cabin bags.

Comparing Wizz Air with other budget carriers

Here's how WIZZ Priority stacks up against similar add-ons:

AirlineFree under-seat bagCabin bag (overhead)Included free?Gate fee
Wizz Air40 × 30 × 20 cm, up to 10 kg55 × 40 × 23 cm, up to 10 kgNo — WIZZ Priority, or the WIZZ Go / WIZZ Plus bundlesaround €65
Ryanair40 × 30 × 20 cm55 × 40 × 20 cm, up to 10 kgNo — Priority & 2 Cabin Bags add-on£70–£75
easyJet45 × 36 × 20 cm, up to 15 kg56 × 45 × 25 cm, up to 15 kgNo — Paid add-on, FLEXI or Inclusive Plus fare, or easyJet Plus membership£48–£60

Wizz Air's free under-seat allowance is identical to Ryanair's at 40 × 30 × 20 cm, but easyJet offers a more generous 45 × 36 × 20 cm, up to 15 kg. The trade-off is that easyJet's cabin bag add-on is often more expensive unless you're a Plus member (details in our easyJet Plus worth it? breakdown).

If you fly Wizz Air more than six times a year, it's worth checking whether the WIZZ Discount Club membership (around £30 annually) saves you more than buying Priority repeatedly.

What happens if you don't buy it

Without WIZZ Priority (or a fare bundle that includes it), you board in the main group. Overhead lockers are allocated first-come, first-served, and on busy flights they fill before the last passengers board. If there's no space left, your under-seat bag stays with you (provided it fits), but anything larger goes into the hold — often at the around €65 gate fee.

Wizz Air staff are trained to spot oversized bags during boarding. They use a measuring frame at the gate, and if your bag doesn't fit, you'll be asked to pay on the spot or check it. There's no grace period or second chance.

How to book WIZZ Priority

You can add it during your initial booking, through Manage Booking on the Wizz Air website, via the mobile app, or at online check-in. The earlier you book, the cheaper it usually is.

If you're travelling as a group, each person needs their own Priority add-on unless you've booked a bundle fare. It's sold per passenger, per flight — so a return trip requires two purchases.

Some credit cards and travel insurance policies include cabin baggage as a perk, but none currently cover Wizz Air's Priority fee directly. Double-check your card benefits before assuming.

Final thoughts

WIZZ Priority is straightforward: you pay for the right to bring a full-size cabin bag and board early. Whether it's worth it depends on how much you're packing, how often you fly, and whether you value the convenience of early boarding. For most travellers on short trips, a well-packed under-seat bag and a bit of planning will save you the fee altogether.

If you do need the extra space, book it when you buy your ticket — waiting until the gate can cost you three or four times as much. And if you're flying multiple times a year, compare the bundles and membership options; they often work out cheaper than adding Priority to every flight individually.

FAQ

Q: Does WIZZ Priority include fast-track security?

A: It includes priority security lanes at selected airports, but not all. Check your departure airport on the Wizz Air website — if it's listed, you'll have access; if not, you'll use the standard queue.

Q: Can I add WIZZ Priority after I've checked in?

A: Technically yes, but it's expensive and availability isn't guaranteed. You can add it via Manage Booking up until online check-in closes, or at the airport desk for a higher fee. Once you reach the gate, your only option is the around €65 gate charge if your bag doesn't fit.

Q: Do children need their own WIZZ Priority?

A: Yes, if they're bringing a cabin bag. The allowance is per passenger, regardless of age. Infants under two travelling on a parent's lap don't get a separate baggage allowance.

Q: Does WIZZ Priority guarantee I'll find space in the overhead locker?

A: It gives you the right to bring a cabin bag and board early, which greatly improves your chances. But if you board late despite having Priority, or if the flight is rescheduled onto a smaller aircraft, space isn't formally guaranteed. In practice, Priority passengers almost always find space.

Airline baggage rules and fees change frequently and can vary by route, travel date and when you book. Always check the airline's current official baggage policy before travelling.
